Asylum' as it was originally named was built during the height of
Beechworth's gold rush period in 1867 and operated until it's closure
in 1995.

Yackandandah and District Historical Society and Museum. (temporarily closed due to fire) With photo albums of buildings as they were back in the 1800's and more of recent events eg. Making of Strange Bedfellows "the movie". Yackandandah and District Historical Society Inc own and operate the Bank of Victoria Museum, which houses a collection of local documents, photographs, objects and informaiton in two historic buildings the Bank of Victoria (1860) and managers residence (c 1858) (located in the centre of town)
Yackandandah Walking Tracks There
are plenty of walking tracks around Yackandandah you can even get a map
of a town walk from the Yackanandah Museum in High Street. click here for an area map
The Gorge At the top end of Whiskey Flat, Messes Edwards and party constructed a tail race in 1859. This was deepened in the early 1880's and now forms the gorge which diverts the creek from its former course. A
two to three minute walk takes you to the gorge, two man made stone
diversion walls and through an area that was extensively mined. Return to town the same way turning right into Windham Street.
Former Beechworth Yackandandah Railway Station. With great ceremony the first train ran on this line in 1891, after some years of pressure for improved transport. On the steep inclines from Beechworth sand had to be placed on the lines in frosty weather. (see map at tourist centre)
Yackandandah General Cemetery Established on its present site in 1859, the cemetery contains memorials and stories of many of the district's pioneers. Up the hill and to the right there is an area reserved for Chinese graves. Research into those buried here can be done hrough the local Cemetery Trust or Historical Society. (see map at tourist centre)
Allans Flat David Reid settled at Allans Flat in 1845 and a Cairn at the entrance to the Reserve on the southern side of the lake commemorates this event. Gold diggers were active in this area from the 1850's till the 1890's. The
lake was created by barge mining, with alluvial gold extracted from the
rock bottom of this valley from the 1890's till 1904. (see map at tourist centre)
Osbornes Flat Osbornes Flat was names after James Osborne, a squatter who took up land in October 1837 known as Yackandandah No. 1 Run, In this goldmining village fo the 1850's and later there were five hotels, at least three stores, a lodging house, a bootmaker a blacksmith and a butcher as well as other traders and a school. The main street ran close to where the road runs today. The original township has been "picked over" for gold as a barge went up the creek mining the area. The gold from the diggings was then taken by horse and dray to Yackandandah. (see map at tourist centre)
Rowdy Flat Rowdy Flat was beleived to be a rough and noisy township. The area was one of the richest alluvial gold areas in the district.
